Eight Things You Can Do To Set Yourself Up for A Successful School Year
Summer is in full swing and we hope that you are enjoying your time with family and friends. This well-deserved break is important for both your mind and your body. However, setting aside some time to do a little preparation and goal setting, can help mitigate some of the stress that naturally comes with the start of the new school year.
Here are 8 ways to get a head start and ease the transition of back-to-school.
- Reset + Reorganize
- Clean out your backpack, pencil case, and sports bags. Do a summer purge of clothes that no longer fit, and get your study area organized.
- SAT/ACT Study schedule
- Sign up for the exam and tutoring sessions if needed, and block out time in your schedule each week to devote to studying. Take some practice tests.
- Buy School Supplies
- Avoid the back-to-school rush by buying your school supplies now.
- Review Past Subject Material
- Some courses are building blocks for future courses. If, for example, you are taking calculus in the fall, then review some of the pre-calc material to refresh your memory on key concepts you’ll be using to solve calculus problems. Khan Academy is a great website that has free video tutorials on almost all major high school subjects (khanacademy.org).
- Order School Books
- If your school requires that you order your school books for the coming year, now might be a good time to do that before supplies run low.
- Review Syllabus
- When you get a syllabus, plug test dates into your calendar along with office hours and any important school events or dates.
- Finish Summer Reading
- Have you finished your assigned summer reading? Don’t wait until the week before school starts to cram it all in. It’s better to spread out your reading, and to take notes on the main characters, plot, and other observations. Then you can refer back to them when you return to school.
- Declutter Your Schedule
- Think about dropping activities that take up too much of your time during the school year. Your goal should be to achieve balance in your schedule so you have enough time to do well in your courses without feeling overextended.
