While the U.S. Education Department believes that standardized testing provides important data on student learning and success, critics argue that these tests have never been a valid or reliable measure of what students know or are able to do, and that they are especially unreliable now. The number of students taking SAT Subject Tests has been steadily declining, and so for many, it was no surprise when the College Board decided to discontinue the tests along with the SAT with essay. While this change may be a step in the right direction, many remain unsure about how the decision will impact the admissions process going forward.
